The Courage to Guard the Good:
Saint Leo the Great and the Strength to Protect What Is Sacred 11-10-25
Memorial of Saint Leo the Great
Some people enter history with a sword in their hand. Saint Leo entered with a shepherd’s staff and a voice that could silence fear. The world around him was shaking. Armies advanced. Politics failed. People wondered if Rome had reached its final breath. Yet Leo stood at the gate like a man who knew that God remains faithful even when empires lose their footing.
The Gospel today warns that scandal is real and temptation has ripple effects. Jesus tells us that we must protect what is holy so that others do not fall. That is courage. It is not loud or dramatic. It begins when we take responsibility for the influence we carry. Every time we speak or choose or react, we shape the lives around us in ways we may never see.
Saint Leo understood that holiness is never passive. He did not wait for someone else to safeguard the faith. He did not keep quiet when the truth was under attack. When the Huns approached the city gates, Leo did not hide behind walls or titles. He stepped forward with conviction and trust that God would act through the courage of a servant.
We usually picture courage as battle armor. But the Church teaches us another image. Courage looks like a parent who refuses to give up on a difficult teenager. Courage looks like the person who refuses to let resentment write the story of their heart. Courage looks like choosing integrity when it would be easier to go along with the crowd.
Courage is the strength to protect what is beautiful in yourself and in others. It is the gate that keeps the sacred from being trampled by the pressures and voices of a noisy world. There are moments in every life when God invites us to stand firm. Stand firm in faith when doubt arrives. Stand firm in kindness when anger pushes back. Stand firm in hope when fear says nothing will change.
Saint Leo reminds us that every disciple stands at the gate of something worth saving. Your peace. Your relationships. Your calling. The truth that God has entrusted to your heart. There is goodness planted in you that deserves a defender.
So ask yourself today:What has God placed under my protectionWhere must I stand firm with loveWho needs me to speak truth or offer shelter
Do not underestimate the quiet strength God has seeded in your soul. Faith can move mountains, Jesus says, but sometimes faith simply holds the line and refuses to retreat.
Grace flows like a river. Courage stands like a gate. And Christ builds His Church on both.
Saint Leo the Great continues to teach us that when a believer stands firm with God, fear loses its voice.
Prayer
