THE CHAPLET OF THE SEVEN SORROWS OF MARY: A JOURNEY INTO THE COMPASSIONATE HEART OF OUR MOTHER

The Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows of Mary is a profound devotion that draws us into the heart of the Blessed Mother, inviting us to share her grief and discover the wellspring of hope that flows through her faith. More than recounting past sorrows, this chaplet helps us unite our own sufferings with hers and find in her a mother who walks with us in every trial.
A Brief History of the DevotionThis devotion began in the Middle Ages, especially promoted by the Servite Order in the 13th century. The Church has since encouraged meditation on Mary’s sorrows as a way of deepening our compassion, strengthening our faith, and growing closer to Christ through His Mother.
Why Pray the Chaplet? In honoring Mary’s sorrows, we come to understand more deeply the cost of our redemption and the depth of her maternal love. We find strength to endure our own crosses and learn to trust, as Mary did, in God’s mysterious yet faithful providence.
How to Pray the ChapletThe Chaplet consists of seven groups of seven Hail Marys, each preceded by an Our Father, while meditating on one of Mary’s Seven Sorrows.
The Seven Sorrows and Short Meditations
1️⃣ The Prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:22-35)Meditation: Mary, holding her Infant Son in the temple, hears Simeon prophesy that a sword will pierce her soul. Even in this joyful moment, she is asked to surrender her child to God’s mysterious plan.Prayer: Mary, help me to accept the sorrows that come with love, and to trust God’s will, even when it pierces my heart.
2️⃣ The Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15)Meditation: In the dark of night, Mary flees with Joseph and the Child Jesus to Egypt, leaving home and safety to protect Him from Herod’s wrath.Prayer: Mother of exiles and refugees, pray for all who are forced to flee, and help me find God’s presence in the midst of fear and uncertainty.
3️⃣ The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:41-51)Meditation: Mary and Joseph search anxiously for three days, hearts gripped with fear, before finding Jesus teaching in the temple.Prayer: Mary, teach me to trust when I feel lost, and to seek Jesus with perseverance when I cannot sense His presence.
4️⃣ Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to CalvaryMeditation: Mary’s heart breaks as she sees her beloved Son bruised, bleeding, and carrying the Cross. She cannot ease His pain, but she walks with Him, sharing in His suffering.Prayer: Mother of Sorrows, strengthen me to stand beside those who suffer, even when I feel helpless to change their pain.
5️⃣ The Crucifixion and Death of JesusMeditation: Mary stands beneath the Cross, watching her Son die in agony, yet never turning away, loving Him to the end.Prayer: Mary, help me to remain faithful at the foot of the crosses in my life, trusting in God’s love even when hope seems lost.
6️⃣ Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross and Placed in Mary’s ArmsMeditation: Mary holds the lifeless body of her Son, embracing Him one final time, her grief immeasurable, her love undiminished.Prayer: Mother, hold me in your arms when I grieve, and teach me to surrender my suffering to God.
7️⃣ The Burial of JesusMeditation: Mary lays Jesus in the tomb, sealing away not only His body, but the hopes and dreams of the promise she received so long ago. In this darkness, her faith remains.Prayer: Mary, teach me to hope in the silence of the tomb, believing that God brings life out of every death.
Closing Prayer
O Mother of Sorrows, by the anguish you endured at the foot of the Cross, obtain for me the grace to bear my own sufferings with patience and faith, and to remain always close to Jesus, your Son. Amen.
A Final ThoughtThe Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows of Mary is a path not only into her suffering, but into her steadfast love. In her pierced heart, we learn that sorrow can become a place of encounter with God’s mercy and a seed of resurrection hope.
Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.
