THE NOVENA TO OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP: A PRAYER OF HOPE AND TRUST

The Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a cherished Catholic devotion that invites us to turn to Mary in times of need, trusting in her unfailing intercession. More than a set of prayers, this novena is a journey of faith, a way to bring our struggles, hopes, and gratitude to the Mother who never ceases to help her children.
A Brief History of the DevotionThe icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help dates back to the 15th century and has been venerated for centuries as a source of consolation and miracles. In 1866, Pope Pius IX entrusted the icon to the Redemptorists, instructing them to make her known throughout the world. Since then, churches and chapels around the globe have become centers of devotion where the faithful gather weekly to pray the Novena.
Why Pray the Novena? Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a title that reflects Mary’s role as a constant source of aid and comfort. Through this novena, we bring her our burdens—spiritual, emotional, and material—confident that she carries them to Jesus. Many find peace and renewed strength in this simple act of turning to her, week after week, trusting in her motherly care.
How to Pray the NovenaThe novena is typically prayed over nine consecutive days or on nine consecutive weeks, often in a communal setting in church. It includes: 1. The Sign of the Cross. 2. Opening prayers invoking Mary’s help. 3. A reading or reflection on the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. 4. Specific petitions and prayers for personal intentions. 5. The recitation of the Novena Prayer and the Memorare. 6. Concluding prayers of thanksgiving and trust.
A Traditional Novena Prayer“O Mother of Perpetual Help, behold me, a sinner, at your feet. I have recourse to you and put my trust in your powerful intercession. For the love you bear to Jesus, your Son and my Redeemer, for the glory of His name, hear my prayers and grant my petitions. Amen.”
The Memorare“Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.”
A Final ThoughtThe Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help is more than seeking favors—it is learning to live in continual trust, surrender, and gratitude. In every trial and every joy, Mary points us to her Son, reminding us that His grace is always sufficient, and His love never fails.
