The Divine Mercy Chaplet: A Prayer for Our Times

The Divine Mercy Chaplet is one of the Church’s most beloved devotions, a prayer that invites us to trust in God’s boundless mercy poured out for the whole world. More than a string of repeated words, the Chaplet is a powerful intercession, an offering of the Passion of Christ to the Father for the sake of all souls. It is a path of healing and peace, drawing us into the heart of Jesus, where His mercy never fails.
A Brief History of the Divine Mercy Chaplet
The Divine Mercy Chaplet comes from the revelations given by Jesus to Saint Faustina Kowalska, a humble Polish nun, in the 1930s. Jesus revealed to Faustina His desire that the world come to know His mercy, promising extraordinary graces to those who trust in Him and spread devotion to His mercy. On September 13–14, 1935, Saint Faustina saw a vision of an angel sent to destroy part of the earth. As she prayed, she heard an interior voice teaching her the words of the Chaplet. Jesus later told her: “Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will.”
Saint Faustina’s Diary records Jesus’ promises tied to the Chaplet: mercy at the hour of death, graces for hardened sinners, and blessings upon those who pray it for others. Saint John Paul II, known as the “Pope of Mercy,” canonized Faustina in 2000 and instituted Divine Mercy Sunday for the Universal Church.
Why Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet?
The Divine Mercy Chaplet is especially powerful when prayed for the dying, for souls in need of conversion, and for peace in troubled hearts and nations. It centers us in the saving work of Jesus’ Passion—reminding us that every sin and every wound finds healing in His mercy. Prayed in moments of fear, sorrow, or helplessness, the Chaplet offers hope: an assurance that no situation is beyond God’s redeeming love.
How to Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet
The Chaplet is typically prayed on Rosary beads. Here’s the basic structure: 1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross. 2. On the first large bead, pray the Our Father. 3. On the second large bead, pray the Hail Mary. 4. On the third large bead, pray the Apostles’ Creed. 5. On each large bead of the five decades, pray: • “Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.” 6. On each of the ten small beads of the decade, pray: • “For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.” 7. After the five decades, conclude by praying three times: • “Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.” 8. Finish with the Sign of the Cross.
Prayers of the Divine Mercy Chaplet
Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
Eternal Father
Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
For the Sake of His Sorrowful Passion
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
Holy God
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
A Final Thought
The Divine Mercy Chaplet is a prayer of trust and surrender. When we pray it, we unite ourselves to the sacrifice of Jesus, placing the world in the hands of the Father, confident in His endless mercy. Whether whispered at a bedside, chanted in community, or offered alone in a quiet moment, the Chaplet is a powerful channel of grace—reminding us that God’s mercy is deeper than any sin and stronger than any darkness.
