Every human life is sacred because every human person is created in the image and likeness of God. That dignity begins at conception, continues through every circumstance of life, and remains until natural death. It does not increase when we become successful, nor does it diminish when we become weak. Our dignity is not something we achieve. It is something we receive from God.

You are not valuable because you are wanted. You are not valuable because you are healthy. You are not valuable because you are independent. You are not valuable because you are productive. You are not valuable because you are wealthy or because you were born on one side of a border rather than another. You are valuable because you are human, created in the image of God and loved by Him. This is the foundation of Catholic respect for life.

For that reason, being pro-life can never concern only one moment of human existence. We defend the child in the womb because that child possesses a dignity no one has the authority to take away. But the same truth calls us to recognize the dignity of the mother facing a difficult pregnancy, the person living in poverty, the immigrant far from home, the worker vulnerable to exploitation, the person with disabilities, the lonely and mentally suffering, and the elderly or dying person who fears becoming a burden.

These issues are not identical, nor are all threats to human life morally equivalent. Yet they are connected by one fundamental Christian conviction: no human being ever becomes disposable. Human dignity does not disappear when circumstances change. It remains when a person is strong or weak, celebrated or forgotten, independent or dependent, welcomed or unwanted.

This calendar invites us to weave the Gospel of Life into every season of the year, so that respect for life is not reduced to a particular moment, a political category, or a slogan, but becomes a way of seeing another human being. Each month asks us to notice a different place where human dignity can be protected, forgotten, wounded, or defended.

Together, these reflections invite us to see more clearly, love more deeply, and respond more faithfully. From the child whose heart has only begun to beat to the elderly person approaching life’s final breath, from the person surrounded by love to the stranger whom no one seems to notice, from the strong and productive to the person who must depend entirely upon others, the Christian answer remains the same.

Your life has dignity. Your life has meaning. Your life is worthy of protection and love. Your life belongs to God. These truths do not change with our age, health, abilities, circumstances, usefulness, or the opinions of others. They accompany the human person through every chapter of life.

That is what it means to embrace the fullness of Catholic pro-life teaching: to recognize the image of God in every human person, to defend life where it is threatened, to accompany it where it is vulnerable, and to cherish it at every stage and in every season.
